WRAP has been working with WWF, SAPRO, and GreenCape in South Africa to build the SA Plastics Pact which launched in January 2020.
The Pact now has 24 business members from plastic producers to recyclers, including the whole value chain and 19 supporters who have been working together to develop their Roadmap and implement the identified actions.
Our teams worked in partnership with the South African working groups to develop their strategic Roadmap, which launched successfully in October 2020.
The Pact is part of The Ellen MacArthur Foundation's New Plastics Economy initiative, all working towards a common vision for a circular economy for plastics.
The South African Plastics Pact clearly outlines 4 targets to address the issue of plastic. They are:

Taking action on problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging through redesign, innovation or alternative (re-use) delivery model;

100% of plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable;

70% of plastic packaging effectively recycled;

30% average recycled content across all plastic packaging.
Since the development of their Roadmap, SA Plastics Pact has already published their list of problematic and unnecessary items and in the near future will publish their guidance on quick wins for the incorporation of recycled content into plastic packaging and On Pack Recycling Labelling (OPRL) guidance, which they have been developing through their action groups.
WRAP continues to support the SA Plastics Pact team in the delivery of the set targets.
