WRAP joins WWF and 70 international organisations and high profile individuals in calling for food systems transformation to be put higher on the agenda at the upcoming COP28 summit.
The summit must acknowledge the critical role of food systems - covering food production, consumption and waste, land use change, and nutrition - in achieving the Paris Agreement goals. Furthermore, countries must incorporate food systems actions into National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and long-term strategies.
Harriet Lamb, WRAP CEO, “WRAP supports this call for action on food at COP28. With food systems responsible for one third of GHG emissions, we need to radically change how we feed ourselves. National and global leaders must work together towards an ambitious, wholescale transformation of the food system. We must support farmers to implement sustainable farming practices; encourage businesses to tackle emissions; support people towards healthy sustainable diets, and significantly reduce food waste. Only together can we build a sustainable, more equitable food system adapting to climate change and delivering food security for all – including for farmers. Because we won’t stop the worse impacts of climate change if we don’t tackle our food system.”

Notes to Editor
- Food waste is a global environmental issue connected to 8-10% of humanity’s greenhouse gas emissions. It has an estimated cost of around US$1 trillion annually. In the UK, households represent the largest source of food waste and are a key priority for efforts to minimise the amount of food waste and its environmental impact.
- WRAP is a climate action NGO working around the globe to tackle the causes of the climate crisis and give the planet a sustainable future. We believe that our natural resources should not be wasted and that everything we use should be re-used and recycled. We bring together and work with governments, businesses, and individuals to ensure that the world’s natural resources are used more sustainably. Our work includes: UK Plastics Pact, Courtauld Commitment 2030, Textiles 2030 and the campaigns Love Food Hate Waste and Recycle Now. We run Food Waste Action Week and Recycle Week.
