WRAP today announces a consultation on proposed changes and improvements to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Measurement and Reporting Protocols for Food and Drink.
Why: Since the original protocols were launched in May 2022, new guidance from the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, Science Based Targets initiative and WRAP, has impacted how emissions should be measured. WRAP and partners have, therefore, completed an audit of all guidance, sought feedback from industry and representatives (such as the Food Data Transparency Partnership and member bodies) and now need to work with industry to update the Protocols.
WRAP is putting forward changes to the existing Protocols, including interpretation of the new Greenhouse Gas Protocol Land Sector and Removals Guidance. This consultation is an opportunity to comment on the proposed changes.
The ambition of the Protocols is to provide a definitive source for food and drink companies to guide their action on lowering scope 3 emissions, in line with the Courtauld 2030 target of halving absolute GHG emissions by 50% (against a 2015 baseline). This is also a key element of WRAP’s Net Zero Collaboration Action Programme | WRAP
When: The consultation period will run from 10th Jan to 7th Feb 2024.
Results announced: WRAP will consolidate the feedback and: aim to publish later in 2024.
Background
WRAP’s Scope 3 GHG Measurement and Reporting Protocols for Food and Drink, initially launched in May 2022, provided the first consistent methodology for UK food and drink businesses to measure and track progress in reducing supply chain greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
WRAP helped to tackle the confusion faced by many food and drink businesses of interpreting standards not specifically designed for the complexities of food and drink supply chains. The Protocols aspired to be a definitive source for food and drink companies, to guide their action on lowering scope 3 emissions and to bring consistency to scope 3 reporting. Consistency is vital because it allows accurate comparison and progress to be tracked.
As a climate action NGO working around the globe, WRAP leads the way in working with the food and drink sector to measure and act on GHG emissions.
