Every year, UK households throw away 4.4 million tonnes of edible food - worth a staggering £17.5 billion. That's an average of £1,000 wasted per household of four every year. At a time when the cost of living continues to squeeze family budgets and climate pressures intensify, reducing food waste is one of the fastest, simplest ways to save money and protect the planet.
60% of food waste happens in our homes - creating 16 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually. From bread and milk to fresh vegetables and leftovers, the food we buy with the best intentions often ends up in the bin. But it doesn't have to be this way.
This March, Food Waste Action Week returns with a rallying cry: Make Your Food Go Fuuuuuuuurther - for your pocket, for our planet. Running from 9-15 March 2026, the UK's biggest annual food waste reduction campaign inspires simple, practical actions that helps food go further - saving money, time and stress.
In this new campaign for Love Food Hate Waste, everyday hacks take centre stage with themed daily content designed to show how preventing food waste unlocks value across every part of our lives. From meal planning tips and smart storage solutions to creative leftover recipes and recycling reminders, the campaign delivers bite-sized changes mapped to each day of the week:
- Monday: For your money - Stretch your budget further
- Tuesday: For your time - Save precious minutes
- Wednesday: For our planet - Reduce your environmental impact
- Thursday: For your health - Eat well, waste less
- Friday: For your headspace - Less waste, less stress
With more homes across the UK now able to recycle food waste through their caddies under Simpler Recycling, the campaign includes supporting assets to help households prevent waste first - then recycle anything that can't be eaten.
Embargoes
Make your food go fuuuurther assets (food prevention and food waste recycling) and the press release template (TBC) are under embargo until Monday 2 March on social channels.
Support Food Waste Action Week assets are under embargo until 2 March but we urge all partner organisations to post them during the week itself (9-15 March) for a bigger united takeover of social channels.
