Arla case study: Switching from 'Use By' to 'Best Before' on milk

Exploration on what Arla could do to reduce milk waste (in-home), utilising the findings from WRAP research (2018 report) and Arla poll survey (2019).

Understanding why milk has either a 'Best Before' or a 'Use By' date across various countries and challenging the perception of risk in the UK industry.

“Food waste reduction is an important part of Arla’s sustainability strategy. We are committed to reducing food waste at processing level by 50% by 2030, which is aligned to the Courtauld 2030 target.

As well as the focus on reducing its own food waste, Arla has led the way within the dairy industry to help consumers reduce their household food waste.

Arla has developed gold standard on pack labelling which includes changing all our branded milk to ‘Best Before’ date labelling instead of ‘Use By’ and helping consumers with recipe inspiration. WRAP have been critical to the success of these initiatives.”
