Getting together with the whole supply chain is very rare. It provided a unique opportunity for all links in the chain to understand how decisions made at each stage of the development and launch of a product can affect waste.

Paula Higby, Fullers Foods

The first ‘whole chain food waste reduction plan’ (WCP), as part of the UK’s Food Waste Reduction Roadmap, has been delivered through a collaboration between Sainsbury’s, Fullers Foods and Lamb Weston / Meijer UK (LWM). An analysis was made to identify opportunities for food waste reduction across the frozen chips supply chain which has already resulted in increased redistribution of products with short shelf lives. Sainsbury's, Fullers Foods and Lamb Westen are already progressing further opportunities.

WCP Sainsburys

Sainsbury’s is working hard to put as much of our food surplus and food waste as possible to good use. This includes working with farmers and growers to reduce food waste in our supply chain, sending surplus food waste from our stores to our food donation partners and recovering energy from our waste.

Harriet Griffiths, Product Technologist, Sainsbury’s Frozen Team

In our case, there is not a lot of  food waste, because we sell  a frozen product that you can store for a long time. But ideally we want to get to zero food waste. We need to be aware of where and why this food waste arises and how to reduce it.

Andrew McDonagh, LWM International Key Account Manager (who led the work for the Wisbech plant).
