10 June 2021 Guide

Best practice on redistributing own-label products within the supply chain

This best practice guide identifies how a more consistent approach can be taken to the redistribution of surplus retailer own-label food from supply chain businesses. This will result in more food being made available for redistribution, in a timely manner.

If retailer brand-owners can adopt more consistent requirements, as contained in this best practice, and be satisfied that more redistributors meet their standards, then their supplier base should be able to form partnerships with more organisations. This means food suppliers will be able to choose to work with additional redistribution organisations and increase opportunities to redistribute surplus: reducing food waste and helping people.

Through committing to greater transparency, by sharing information on checks, audit findings and requirements on redistribution organisations, there will be reduced risk and burden of effort for all retailers.

This best practice is based on established food industry standards and protocols and existing good practice from across industry and the redistribution sector, following consultation with retailers, suppliers, redistribution organisations and sector bodies, during 2020 and 2021.
