This guide provides local authorities with information on the collection of household food waste as a means of diverting material from landfill or other residual waste treatment. The original guide was produced in 2009 and updated in 2016. This latest update for 2024 pulls together the findings from more recent studies and pilots conducted by WRAP and others.
The guide includes the different options and systems for collecting food waste and highlights issues to consider when planning and implementing a new food waste collection scheme. The guide also provides advice to local authorities with existing weekly separate food waste collections on how to increase participation and capture through effective promotion and communication activities.
The intended audience for this guide is local authority officers. The range of content in the guide means that various staff may find individual sections useful.
This updated version, is easy to navigate through the different sections interactively.
To support this main guide, we have produced a summary version, the intended audience for this is elected members. It summarises the key issues contained in the main guide and is available as an interactive digital version or download suitable for print – to suit your elected member’s needs.
