It is worth estimating the impact a home composting scheme could have before embarking on a home composting campaign, especially if you are considering offering subsidised bins.
Costs
The National Home Composting Framework, now available exclusively from Straight Ltd, was established by the Waste Improvement Network (WIN) when the WRAP home composting scheme ended in September 2009.
Any local authority in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland can purchase composters at either bulk prices or the agreed prices. Compost bins through the National Home Composting Framework start at £16.00.
Further details are available from Straight Ltd at The National Home Composting Framework website.
Many local authorities offer subsidised compost bins to residents.
Impacts
WRAP has commissioned several studies since 2005 to provide estimates of the quantities of biodegradable waste diverted from landfill by home composting participation.
The main studies are available on the WRAP Home Composting webpage and discuss the subject matter in detail.
The overall conclusion of this work is that a home composting bin can divert 150 kg per household per year of organic waste from disposal. Resulting compost can be applied to gardens.
