Citizens attitudes & behaviours relating to food waste, packaging and plastic packaging

One of the world’s largest public surveys into attitudes on food waste and packaging.

Key points
  • Survey reveals that public concern over packaging has almost doubled from 16% to 28% in the past six years.
  • It reveals public support for packaging that is 100% recyclable.
  • It also reveals high public understanding of the role and value of packaging in preventing food waste.

This report outlines the key findings from a comprehensive piece of research undertaken with 6,000 UK consumers.The purpose of the research is to assess citizens’ views in relation to food waste and food packaging and compare this to the previous survey undertaken in 2012. The results will inform national programmes and policy including:

  • Courtauld 2025 including the value & roles of packaging in reducing food waste;
  • UK Plastics Pact;
  • Current policy issues where it is important for the UK, Scottish and Welsh governments to have informed, evidence-based views from consumers.

The survey was jointly commissioned by the Industry Council for Packaging and the Environment (INCPEN) and WRAP, supported by the Packaging Federation, the Kent Resource Partnership, the British Retail Consortium and the Food and Drink Federation.
