Tracking the UK's progress towards achieving the Courtauld 2030 food waste target and UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.3.
With not much time left to achieve the 2030 target, it is incumbent upon all large food businesses in the UK to play their part in delivering SDG 12.3 by joining the growing numbers already committed to and implementing ‘Target, Measure, Act.’
This report summarises the key achievements and impact of the Food Waste Reduction Roadmap to 2022.
Key highlights
- 351 committed organisations (which also includes trade bodies, redistribution organisations, companies involved in waste management and others), an increase of 10% since last year.
- 221 large businesses implementing ‘Target, Measure, Act’ in the past year, an increase of 7%.
- 89% of large businesses that have committed, now following through on that commitment by providing evidence of implementing ‘Target, Measure, Act’, showing expansion of capabilities amongst Roadmap supporters.
Sector-specific achievements
- For retailers that provided comparable tonnage data for 2018 and 2021, a reduction in food waste by over 19,000 tonnes (8%), equivalent to almost £62 million of food that did not end up as waste, whose production would have been associated with 60,000 tonnes of GHG emissions.
- For producers and manufacturers that provided comparable multi-year data, a reduction overall in their edible food waste by 13,900 tonnes, or 1.4%, compared to their individual baselines (which range from 2015 to 2020). However, total food waste (including both edible and inedible parts) has increased by 100,000 tonnes, or 9%, compared to the individual baselines, mostly driven by four large businesses.
- 4 new hospitality & food service businesses committed to the Roadmap (a 10% increase year on year) with two thirds providing evidence of implementing Target, Measure, Act, despite the unique challenges faced by this sector.
- 20 whole chain or collaborative plans now in progress or completed (almost double the number reported last year).
- 9 projects successfully delivered by WRAP together with supply chain businesses, supporting their growers in collaborating to measure on-farm food surplus and waste.

Food businesses of all kinds need to continue action to reduce their own waste and in supply chains, with many more businesses needing to set targets, measure and act – including on farms – and accelerate action.
