The Food Waste Reduction Roadmap: Progress Update 2024

The Food Waste Reduction Roadmap report summarises the progress made and clarifies how food and drink businesses can contribute to achieving the Courtauld Commitment 2030 food waste target and how the UK can play a part in achieving SDG 12.3.

Key highlights and messages

The Food Waste Reduction Roadmap now has over 400 committed organisations (including food and drink businesses, trade bodies, waste management companies and others), an increase of 10% since last year.

Looking at the Food Waste Reduction Roadmap milestone targets:

  • 25%* of large food and drink businesses have set a food waste reduction target. This is an increase from 22% in 2022. This is positive news, however it is still a long way from the 2025 milestone of 80%.

There has been no change from 2022 for large businesses in the following areas:

  • Measuring and reporting to WRAP (30%)
  • Achieving reductions in food waste relative to food handled (12%)
  • Reporting actively collaborating with their supply chain partners to reduce food waste (19%)
  • Reporting taking action to support citizens reduce food waste (18%)

*all percentages are based on an estimate of 690 large food and drink businesses in the UK

To meet Roadmap milestone targets, many more large food and drink businesses need to commit to the Roadmap and implement the Target Measure Act approach to tackling food waste.
