Gate Fees 2021/22 report

The Gate Fees 2021/22 report summarises the findings of WRAP’s fifteenth annual gate fees survey. The survey covers gate fees charged to local authorities in the UK for a range of municipal waste recycling, recovery, and disposal options.

Comparing the costs of alternative waste treatment options

The most recent in our long running series of gate fees reports provides the latest costs for a range of waste and recycling treatments and also highlights recent trends and emerging themes for such contracts and services.

Key findings include:
  • An upward trend in materials recycling facilities (MRF) gate fees continues from previous surveys.
  • The median, gross UK MRF gate fee for contracts sorting 2 or more materials is higher compared to 2019/20.
  • The gate fees for the other disposal routes showed limited change from 2019/20 with anaerobic digestion decreasing, in-vessel composting remaining stable, and energy from waste and non-hazardous landfill increasing.
  • A trend for more recent MRF contracts to include risk share on material income, a drive for higher material quality and more stringent enforcement of contamination.

The report is particularly relevant to Local Authorities looking to better understand the current situation in the gate fees and plan for future services and contracts.

We also recommend signing up to our gate fees webinar. This webinar will provide the opportunity to delve deeper into the report findings, highlighting the key learning opportunities from the research, look at how local authorities can apply the data to help make informed decisions and provide a platform to answer any questions that you may have and provide feedback on how future surveys could be conducted and improved upon.
