Working at all stages from farm to fork to improve efficiency and productivity, minimise waste, protect natural assets and reduce global warming.
- It is widely recognised that meat production is a significant source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and 400,000 tonnes of meat is wasted in the UK every year, mostly at home.
- Meat in a Net Zero World aims to make the UK meat industry a world-leading example of efficient and sustainable meat production and supply.
Progress and highlights 2022-23
Our priority action for 2022-23 was: to highlight and promote collaboration on current projects working to decarbonise animal feed, and to identify barriers towards scaling up solutions. WRAP programmes tackling HaFS waste and HHFW have also formed research and resources focused on reducing meat waste.
From the Courtauld data request it was found 100% of HaFS MIANZW supporters* who responded have set a food waste reduction target and, as the figures highlight below, there has been active engagement across the organisations to realise these ambitions:
- 71% actively engage with staff on wasting less food within their own operations
- 71% are taking collaborative action with supply chain partners to reduce food waste.
*It should be noted that there were seven HaFS MIANZW supporters who responded and, although this represents a good response rate from HaFS MIANZW supporters, any results should be observed with caution due to this low number.
Guardians of Grub, a WRAP initiative and united collective from across the Hospitality and Food Service (HaFS) sector, launched their Meat in a Net Zero World resources in the Summer of 2023. This includes a toolkit and checklist, specifically designed to reduce meat waste within HaFS.
With its inaugural meeting in September 2022, the Animal Feed working group was set up to bring meat industry players, researchers, and policy makers together to discuss animal feed – identified as a focus area due to it being a large share of emissions in meat production. The group has shared a host of projects, especially on new feed innovations for ruminants, monogastric animals, and aquaculture, and explored the major barriers such as regulation and the logistics of scaling action.
