In order to implement a real circular economy, we need to change the way we produce, consume and dispose of our products. The Accelerator Session ‘Plastics: from a linear problem to circular solutions’ will be delivered in collaboration by WRAP, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the World Bank on the 8th December under the frame of the 2022 World Circular Economy Forum (6th-8th December 2022) held in Kigali, Rwanda. This remote Accelerator Session will focus on the much-discussed issue of plastics, showing new data about the effect of plastic waste mismanagement and discussing the actions that many stakeholders and innovators are taking to explore and implement solutions.
This event is an Accelerator Session at the World Circular Economy Forum 2022 (www.WCEF2022.com).
Evidence about the impact of plastic leakage in the environment will be provided during the session through the presentation of two important reports. OECD will introduce us to their Global Plastics Outlook, (available from the link), that were released in February and June of this year and that provide projections of use, waste generation and leakage of plastics to the environment at the global level. The OECD will also discuss a policy scenario that shows how plastic pollution could be diminished significantly through ambitious and internationally coordinated policy interventions across all stages of the plastics life-cycle.
The World Bank will present their response to the plastic challenge in West Africa developed under the WACA Program with countries and regional partners. The session will showcase results of work done to date on economics, value chain and case studies, how engagement using photojournalism is used to address the issue of plastic pollution in coastal West Africa, and the upcoming Flagship “West Africa Regional Response to Plastics” will be highlighted.
The Session will also focus on possible solution to the plastics emergency. WRAP implemented the UK Plastics Pact back in 2018 and is now working internationally to support many other Plastics Pacts that have started in all inhabited continents. WRAP will lead a panel with members of the two active African Plastics Pact (the South Africa Plastics Pact and the Kenya Plastics Pact) to explore how voluntary agreements are working in the continent, what challenges are still outstanding and what opportunities for change they are creating. There will then be a focus on possible innovations that are coming up and that might change the future of plastics around the world.
