As part of WRAP’s work upscaling farm food waste measurement in the UK, we delivered nine projects with supply chain businesses and developed corresponding case studies for each to address on-farm food surplus and waste.
Opportunities for food waste reduction in leek production
In this case study, we follow the journey of Allpress Farms as it assesses the quantity of, and reasons for, on-farm food waste in leeks across a number of its fields and packing facility after harvesting.
“This is the first time we’d measured our in-field waste in such detail and it’s given us plenty to think about. In particular, taking account of varietal tendencies in the harvest planning could enable us to harvest varieties earlier that can quickly deteriorate, helping to reduce food waste and boost returns.”
